Putting the same article you wrote for your blog onto article directories
Are you stuck at a give way point and wondering, can I put my article from Ezine onto my blog or vice versa?
I hear this being asked quite frequently in forums so…a truthful answer would be: no one really knows what the search engines will or won’t do; but we all know it exists in some form or other.
What you should be thinking of here is getting it in front of the bus, (so to speak)…Ezine articles currently receive over 50 million unique visitors a month.
The Duplicate Slap:
The original duplicate content was first introduced for web masters that had 1 unique article uploaded, which they’d then take and duplicate it 50 or 60 times spreading it throughout their site, google didn’t like it and the owners of the Websites should have known better anyhow, so maybe google were right in handing out such penalties, you want to give value to someone first and build yourself up a reputation, not giving them the same material over and over; tweaking it here and there to try and bring in sales.
Exclusive to Your Name:
Your article does not have to be exclusive to ezine articles.com – BUT it does have to be exclusive to you as the author who wrote it. Example: I wrote this article, so it is exclusive to my name (Eamon Diamond). What this means is, if I were to submit this article to Ezine articles or many other article directories, they should not be able to find that article under anyone Else’s name, other than my own (or in your case: if you wrote it, your name). So remember, it has to be exclusive to your name, but it doesn’t have to be exclusive to the article directories, so yes you can take posts from your own blog and place them on article directories – but NOTE, they do say it’s best to tweak the article a little, just to keep things a little different.
I like to change my articles a little before I give it to them, but I know a lot that don’t and they’ve never had a problem yet, but it doesn’t mean rules won’t change, keep that in mind.
Are You Weary:
Duplicate content does exist, (right) and a lot of people are weary of it; where they don’t want to get penalized. If you think about it like this…search engines know it exists and no one for sure knows the exact implications there is for it, as google likes to keep things secret; but we do know it exists…on the other hand if you were asking the question, can I use my content that I post to say the likes of ezine articles, on different sites I own and get away with sending it to other article directories as well…the answer is yes.
Posted All Over The Web:
Now lets look at how google and other search engines know it exclusively belongs to you, meaning you wrote it. If you think about it, google knows that people are going to take your written articles from the likes of Ezine articles and other article directories and start posting it all over the Web, that means there is going to be hundreds of blogs hosting your article for you, that’s the theory behind articles getting traffic for you, also getting some backlinks and more importantly, giving rights for people to republish your article. So, google knows it’s going to happen, but how do they determine it is genuine content to you to give you that number 1 spot.
Who’s The Mian Author:
If you think about the search engines position here, they can’t show if it’s duplicated 100 different times on 100 different website, so they can’t possible show 100 number 1 positions for 100 different websites or blog, so search engines have to figure out who can we trust and more importantly, who do our users trust. Once they figure out this information, it’s easier for them to figure out who they should put at the top of their list, so all in all Google and other search engines do rely on other high ranking sites to let them know who’s real and who’s not. Basically their going to figure out sooner or later who’s giving you enough credit form these high ranking sites to raise you up the rankings and at the same time figure out if it’s you who first wrote the content in the first place, they know the top article directories have checked you out with all the sophisticated tools at hand for duplicate content before accepting you in.
Keep in mind a lot of the times these article directories can get you a whole lot more traffic faster than your own Website or blog.
They’ve Been Around The Block:
The reason for this is because they’ve been around a lot longer and know what they’re actually doing. So maybe one to look at here if you are worried about the duplicate content, is to first submit your article to the likes of Ezine articles first then post it on your own Website or blog, I know a few reading here may do it vice versa thinking it’s best to maybe get it indexed first on their blog, but bear in mind what we’ve just covered, where google is looking for (who can we trust) and (what users are actually looking at this content), where did it originate from, who’s the author and so on…
Googles Getting Tough:
So to finish up here, google have been given Ezine articles a hard time lately, (that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still use them), but it used to be the case where people were taken the content that was on their blog and given it directly to Ezine articles without changing it, Ezine articles did turn a blind eye to this known you were the creator of the content in the first place, but they did stipulate in their terms of service, that they didn’t like 100% of your content coming from your blog or other sites that you owned without making a few changes, i.e, say you were to take 40% to 50% of it and change it around a little to make it different and unique.
Keep this in mind, as Ezine articles are getting a difficult time at the (moment I’m writing this post), form google and are really tightening up their terms of service on this, basically at the moment they’re weeding out all the bad stuff, even to the point of closing accounts after the shake up they have had from google.
Hope that cleared up a few points, please feel free to leave your comments and let me know what you think, or have you ever come up against it in your marketing where you weren’t quite sure whether or not the duplicate band was a “fact,” or a “myth.”

Hi Ed, thanks for the comment,
Yip , for sure article directories can certainly bring back some nice targeted traffic and search engines rely on them for feedback.
You probably know this Ed, but the last few weeks Google has been pretty tough on Ezine articles, more or less letting them know that a lot of their articles are not up to standard.
A lot of peoples articles have moved down the ranks form Googles algorithms change, I see also Ezine has changed their article word submission to 400 plus to get accepted.
Thank Ed for popping over catch you later mate.

Good post Eamon,
In a nutshell – it all comes back to the basic premise of giving people what they want!
As with creating products that people want…
Content should be what google want, and google want good original content that people are looking fopr…
Simples…lol

Hi Randy,
Yip! You bet, it’s that old simple rule – give people what they want by writing good quality content. Google will soon figure out whethers it good or not you can bet on that…
Thanks for stopping by Randy,

Hi Eamon, was you looking over my shoulder today?
So far this year my time has been taken up with my mums situation and has kept me off line most of the time. So I’ve been thinking….ouch!
I wrote a couple of blog post last year about wordpress plugins that got a great response from my readers. So what i done today was made an article out of the 2 blog posts. A little from each and some re-writting and bang I have an original article that was written by myself. I have submitted it to Ezine and a few other choice directories so will have to pop back to see the results when the article gets approved.
I know that Ezine are tightening their rules and being a little more careful as to what they’ll allow and to be honest Eamon it’s not before time. Some of the articles i’ve read have left me wondering why they were submitted in the first place.
I did try the Ezine plugin to send my posts straight over to Ezine but being honest i couldn’t get on with it so just deleted the plugin and went back to the manual way of doing things.
Great post my friend, so much so it’s being stumbled and tweeted.
Catch up again very soon Eamon
Respect and Regards, Barry

Hi ya Barry,
Thanks for popping by, yep, I have to admit I was blog hopping back and fro this couple of days to see how things were
I saw your posts on the plug-ins and I have to admit they were very useful, so if anyones reading this post and are looking to find out a little more info on plug-ins, Barry has it well covered on his blog.
Yes Barry, I know Ezine is tightening up, I used to be fit to get an article up within a day, now it’s taken about a week, but that doesn’t bother me, I just let it sit to see how it goes.
You pulled on a good point, that it was about time Ezine started looking a little deeper into what they should be letting through their doors, Google certainly let them know.
Hope all’s well with you and your Mother, catch you later Barry

Hi Eamon,
There are so many different views on this subject that it can make your head spin sometimes, this is a great post and explains things well.
I tend to write an article and then carry it on with more information as a blog post. But I have submitted the same article to several article directories in the past, but not before some modifications.

Hi Robert,
There are a lot of people that do exactly what you’ve just mentioned.
I do this also, I write an article, set it on my blog and make sure it has enough word count, (say around 1000words plus) where I can take parts of it out for article directories, then change it around a little a send it off.
I’ve never had a problem doing it this way. If I think I’m going to have a hard time getting ranked for a very high keyword that I really want to write about – that’s when I use E-zine articles first and some of the other high ranking article sites to get it in a top position, usually happens in a day or so
.
Thanks for stopping by Robert.

Hi Eamon,
Great post on the usability of our writing. Sometimes it is easy to disregard the flexibility we have. Too many people have created an aspect of fear around duplicate content.
Enjoy the journey.

Hi Mandy,
Thanks for the comment, I know I’m a bit late with the reply, but people that leave a comment usually show up in my email…I must have missed it.
Yes! It’s that old fear factor again isn’t it, that’s what throws a lot of folk off. Thanks for stopping by Mandy.

Hi. Eamon, thanks so much for this information.
About 1/2 hour ago I submitted an article to Ezine, I could not resist the temptation and published in my blog also, but behind was the scary feeling “is it going to be stamped as duplicate”.
You cleared my thought with this interested and educational post.
Thank you!

Hi Ruth,
I’m glad the article helped, I was just saying to Mandy that I’m a bit late in replying…but I never got them notification through letting me know someone had commented, maybe there was a bug in the system at that time.
Yeah it’s fine to publish it in your blog also…Ezine like you to change it a little though, it just leaves things a little different for the reader if they do land back on your page they may be thinking…Oh! this is the article I’ve already read.
So if one could take them back to an article that was tweeked a little or even offer a free incentive when they arrive at your blog that is going to be related to what is was they were interested in seeking out in the first place.
Thanks for stopping by Ruth.
