So I’ve had a few ask me about the new Facebook Newsfeed layout, but One in particular?
“Why have they done away with the old “Top Stories” & “Most Recent” seeing as almost 50% of the people on Facebook actually used it.”
This has always been on Facebooks agenda to try and sort out what way the newsfeed works. Way back when Facebook was starting out, they would give you a listing of posts that they thought were important, the downside to it was…the posts were sitting there and could have been up to 3 or 4 hours old news.
SO! along came 2009 and Facebook give a statement that it would no longer display feed that was any older than 10 minutes, leaving it that the newsfeed would show up as it happened; (but this raised other issues) – “which posts were actually important.” Then came the ‘Live Feed’ and ‘News Feed’ view – which Facebook later renamed to “Top News” and “Most Recent.”
New Changes.
The new “NewsFeed” has it that both of the above two tab features that used to be; are now merged into the same feed…Facebook’s now determining how much it thinks it should allocate to show up in your newsfeed.
- ‘Top Stories’ will be based on how recently you have logged into the site.
- If you are like myself
checking Facebook quite often, then most of the items in your feed will be recent.
- If however you are logging back in after a few days, then Facebook will try to give you an overview of the most important things your friends have been sharing.
- Important stories will now be denoted with a small light blue triangle in the top left hand corner…shown in the image.

- You can also click on the triangle to let Facebook know if they missed an important story that you find interesting and it will mark it as a top story…or on the flip side of that…you can also let them know if you don’t care for some of the feed they thought was important.
So that’s it on the new News Feed, hope you’re liking it, I know a few ain’t, but given time I’m sure they’ll understand why Facebook have made the changes.
See yaaaaaaaaaa ~ Eamon.

Hi Eamon,
It’s just as well we have you to rely on mate
As you know I’m fairly new over on Facebook and I just learnt my way around and they changed it all about grrrr
I must admit that at the moment I try not to stay on there to long as its so easy for the time to fly by, especially when trying to find your way around the recent changes. I suppose I should really spend an evening there and do nothing but learn the new aspects and what’s it’s all about. I fear I’ve only just scratched the surface.
Another great useful post Eamon, thanks mate.

Hi Barry
Yeah! I know what you mean about staying on there to long, it can waste up a lot of your time
Great though if you can manage your time around it, Facebook has been one of my top ways of bringing in traffic, because of the amount of traffic that is there on a daily basis.
They do make a lot of changes – don’t they, I also see a lot of people complaining about the new layout…the timeline, but once you get to using it…it’s really a better layout. Lawsuits going on as I type though, (Timelines.com) a domain owned by a seperate company not attached to Facebook, have said that the new name Timeline has had a negative impact on their company and have opened a lawsuit against Facebook for using the name, so fb has put the launch off for a few days.
Have a good day Barry

Hi Eamon
You know to be honest I quite like the new layout and I find it quite easy to use, but that’s just me!
When people get use to things, and when change occurs they inevitably will complain about it. Then as they have no choice they start to use it only to find after a week or so they forget that they complained as they are now use to it! (Hope that makes sense?)
I mean Facebook did announce way back that they were going to make these changes, but nobody stopped using FB did they! And they won’t as it’s still the No1 Social Media site.
Anyway mate there will be plenty of more changes to come and we will complain about them, but then I guess that’s human nature!
Great post as always Eamon…
Take care, catch up soon

Hi Ian – how’s tricks
I like the new changes too, I know there’s a lot of people that will turn their noses up at it, but sure once they get to using it…they’ll soon see the difference and benefits.
I understand what you mean about the making sense bit, I agree with you there and yes; Facebook did mention they were bringing out changes and there’s a few more coming too, all for the better
.
Facebook is the No1 Social media site at present as you’ve pointed out Ian and is only going to get bigger.
All the best…
Eamon.

Hi Terry
How’s that Sally girl treating you
…I know she’s doing really good things for people online, at least someones keeping people on the right track, because there’s so many out there now that we have to watch out for.
Ahh…the old Facebook, “you’ve got taaaa love it” – “or hate it,” lol.
They’ve been making changes alright, but a lot of the changes people will get used to and they’re for the best, it’s a fantastic Social Media platform for traffic
.
All the best Terry, thanks for swinging by,
Eamon.

Hi Eamon,
I’ve been using Facebook quite sometime now, and it’s all new to me. I am looking for someone who can explain to me what is the difference between the highlighted story and the top story. I hope I can catch more of your post about Facebook.
Thanks!
